Shalders was born in Portsmouth, England, but moved to London, where he would remain until his death. He is known for his watercolor and oil landscapes depicting sheep and cows. Shalders painted in Wales, Hampshire, Surrey, and Yorkshire, and Cork, Connemara and Kerry in Ireland. In 1863 the London Observer noted that Shalders combines “the accurate delineation of animal life with the charm of landscape.” Shalders was a member of the Institute of Painters in Water Colors (1863, associate, 1865 full member). he was elected an Associate, and in 1865, a member of the Institute of Painters in Water-Colours. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (London, 1848 – 1863); New Watercolor Society; Suffolk Street (gallery); and the British Institution (Pall Mall Pictures Gallery, British Gallery).
