Lipton was born in New York city and as a young man took study at the Art Students’ League there. In 1904 he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a commercial artist for a newspaper. In 1914 Lipton moved to Long Beach where he operated jewelry stores until 1933 when he retired and devoted his time to art, especially landscape painting, but also portraits and still-lifes. In California, he studied with Ted Lucas (Los Angeles) and Orin A. White (Pasadena). He maintained a studio in Long Beach which became a fine art gallery and attracted a number of the days’ leading artists.
